Coach Trina Lewis and Helen Mitchell have a beautiful history of combining travel, work and play!

August 4 – 11, 2017 provided an incredible opportunity to explore and be of service on the island country of CUBA! The adventure began with a short stay in Montego Bay, Jamaica at the fabulous luxury resort, Half Moon. This served as a great segueway to a 7-day cruise around the island of CUBA.

There were three ports of call – Santiago de Cuba, Havana (the capital) and Cienfuegos. Each of the ports were very different, yet much the same. The common thread that intrigued us, as spiritual seekers, were the people of CUBA. Words cannot describe their Spirit; the joy, love and sincerity of the Cuban people. They smiled, shared their best English and were always so gracious and kind. When we looked into their eyes, we could see their desire to be present for us, American tourists, and try their best to share answers to our questions and offer recommendations to see and understand their culture.

We learned about their political history, the economic rise and fall and ultimately their journey to survive! The people of Cuba personify strength. We witnessed them consistently happy with who they are and what they have, and thankfulness for every gift, large or small. We spent time with proud families who were raising pigs to provide food and money for their families, Artists who worked locally and successfully abroad. We met young adults at community centers and children outside of art schools who were excited to visit with us and receive school supplies, toys and sweet American treats.

The streets, restaurants and alleyways were often filled with people dancing and lively music. And everything here pops with color! From the eclectic buildings and classic cars, to the festive clothing and natural surroundings. Bright hues of blue, warms yellows, hot pinks and bold greens cover the entire city. Massive doors of cathedrals welcome visitors from all over the world and the sweet smell of warm churros linger in the air. Yes, ReFRESH has tasted CUBA!

We marveled at the beauty of this country, yet were very aware of present difficulties. Situations and conditions that some would label as poverty, lack, or limitations, never came across as despair. The people of CUBA are filled with hope for the growth and healing of their country, and are very optimistic about their future. They live, work and play in their neighborhoods. They uplift their communities and share what they have with one another, easily. They find new and innovative ways to generate revenue and rely less on their government through arts, crafts and provide services to tourists, such as operating casas particulares (private houses) and delicious paladares (private restaurants).

We learned so much from our Cuban sisters and brothers about the strength of the human spirit. About Faith, Joy, Hope and the will to overcome loss and change.
